A Selfish Viewpoint for Yahoo-Microsoft Merger | |
The tech. industry is abuzz with the attempts of Microsoft to buy Yahoo. I have spent a whole week thinking about it -- with a narrow and selfish perspective. I think any move or deal that will reduce Google's control of the Web Search is good for me. While I get much of our traffic via Google, there is always the fear that we are at Google's mercy for that blessing. I would like to see a worthy competitor to Google in the search field. Scott Mcnealy at Sun used to ask -- "When's the last time you heard of a PC startup"? Meaning that it was almost impossible to compete with Microsoft. Same thing is happening now with Google. Have you noticed how many search companies have gone bonkers, because they cannot survive? I mean, there are no tools for web developers to implement even an elementary "Site Search" without Google. Over the years, I really tried hard to like Yahoo -- I applied for a job there, I am a heavy user of Yahoo mail, Yahoo Finance and loved the Yahoo messenger (till they started delivering ads in it). But I am sorry to say that they do not get my computing needs, and I have no tears left for Yahoo. Overall, I think Microsoft buying Yahoo would be good thing for me.
