Define Intelligence | | A Nobel laureate is in trouble for suggesting that Africans might be less intelligent than Europeans. While it might be politically incorrect and unfashionable thing to do, it is possible that he was speaking the truth, based on his research. But we can argue only if we agree on the definition of intelligence. In computer science, they define (artificial) intelligence as
ability to communicate and ability to learn. I'd add that ability to lead is a sure sign of intelligence. By these definitions, I do not see what Dr. James Watson said is offensive. It would have been inappropriate had he said Africans are less talented or less gifted or in anyway lesser humans. But to say European genes are more intelligent than African genes is like saying African genes are stronger in endurance or are more gifted with musical prowess than European. Isn't that like common knowledge and common belief? I think intelligence is an overrated factor in our society just like beauty is. Emotional maturity, spirituality, and strength of character are qualities that deserve a higher rating.
